Recently, the flu epidemic caused by the new type of coronavirus is serious. Here we pay tribute to the medical staff who are fighting on the front line. This new type of coronavirus reminds me of the SARS virus in 2003. When I described the SARS virus as a "new type of coronavirus", I was still living in Hong Kong at that time and I still have lingering fears in retrospect. In this article, I try to summarize the research on a nutritional supplement that is too common in the past few decades. I hope it will be helpful to everyone. This nutritional supplement is vitamin C.
Perhaps many people don’t know that humans are one of the few animals that cannot synthesize vitamin C by themselves and need to be supplemented from food. Other (primates, bats and guinea pigs, etc. also cannot) most animals can "self-sufficient" in their bodies to transform into vitamin C, this is an evolutionary issue, not the focus of today. However, there is a speech on the Internet by the late Dr. Cathcart, who was recorded in the 1980s. I think his views are quite interesting. Dr. Cathcart's use of high-dose vitamin C is not generally bold, as I will mention below. He was giving a speech to analyze why cats, dogs and cats can eat dirty things on the ground without getting sick. It is likely that the vitamin C produced by animals protects them, and the probability of catching a cold in cats, dogs and dogs is much lower than that of humans (close to It's not that cold viruses only "benefit" humans. His analysis is also that vitamin C in animals plays a role. Well, this is the old doctor’s empirical talk. It seems that no scientific basis has been found. It is up to you to believe it or not, but what I am going to say is based on the basis. The reference materials cited are listed at the end of the article.
When talking about vitamin C, we must first mention the late chemist and vitamin expert Dr. Linus Pauling. He is the only man in history who has won 2 Nobel Prizes alone. But Dr. Pauling’s greatest impact on us may be that he made the public aware of the importance of vitamin C supplementation and that vitamin C can strengthen the immune system. Dr. Pauling believes that daily intake of 1 to 2 grams of vitamin C can reduce the chance of catching a cold, and vitamin C can speed up the recovery time when catching a cold.
In addition to Pauling, there is also a functional medicine doctor (Dr Atkins) who also learned from clinical experience that supplementing 1 gram of vitamin C per day can reduce the duration of a cold by 20%, and in many cases it can get better in a day. In 2013, Dr. Hemila of the University of Helsinki in Finland conducted a meta-analysis of 63 documents, including 29 clinical trials involving 11306 subjects. The conclusion was that the duration of colds in adults taking vitamin C was reduced by 8%, and in children by 14%. Taking vitamin C regularly can also reduce the severity of a cold. Although cold and flu are both viral infections, they are different viruses after all and have different effects on the body. What is the role of vitamin C in other viruses?
I mentioned animals just now. Let’s start with animal experiments. Studies have pointed out that at least 148 animal tests have proved that vitamin C can prevent or reduce infections caused by bacteria and viruses. In an animal experiment in 2006 (Li W., et al), mice infected with influenza A (genetically modified, without vitamin C), the immune system needs vitamin C to produce an effective immune response to deal with concurrent pneumonia.
How does vitamin C work in the human body? In general, the body is saturated at 70 umol/L at any given time (Levin M. 1996), which means that a healthy person can get 200mg of vitamins per day. This saturation point (no matter how much it takes), the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines also believe that healthy young non-smokers can reach the saturation point with 400 mg of vitamin C per day. But this is for "healthy", "young" and "non-smokers". The patient and the elderly, especially the infected or chronically ill, are different. How to know? First of all, it should be explained that although vitamin C intake is safe, everything that enters the human body has a limit (including plain water). If the safety limit is exceeded, different side effects will occur. Vitamin C is no exception. The above-mentioned Cathcart The doctor’s clinical experience (treating more than 9000 patients) is that the upper limit of oral vitamin C for healthy people is 4 to 15 grams per day, and it’s no big deal beyond this level - diarrhea, but you can return to normal after stopping taking a few hours ( Hoffer A.2008), but the tolerance of vitamin C for mild cold patients is 30 grams to 60 grams per day, and for moderate cold patients to 60 grams to 100 grams, patients with severe colds take 100 grams of vitamin a day C does not have diarrhea! What is the reason for the greatly increased tolerance of vitamin C in infected patients?
In fact, when the body is infected (cold, flu, and other bacterial and viral infections), the immune system becomes active. The number of white blood cells (phagocytes) will increase and secrete large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to fight bacteria and viruses, but reactive oxygen species In the process of fighting against viruses and bacteria, and at the same time harming human cells (oxidative stress response), vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant. In protecting cells from damage, a large amount of vitamin C will be oxidized and consumed. Disease causes the cell's vitamin C level to drop, and vitamin C supplementation can rebuild the cell's vitamin C level.
In addition to acting as an antioxidant to reduce the oxidative stress response of the human body during infection, vitamin C also cooperates with the human immune system to stimulate all functions of the immune system, especially various types of white blood cells, which work when vitamin C is sufficient best effect. For example, vitamin C can increase the secretion of interferon (Interferon) in white blood cells, and interferon can reduce the virus infection of cells (Kim et al. 2013). The level of vitamin C in white blood cells is 80 times that in the blood (Evans R 1982), which indirectly indicates the importance of vitamin C in the immune system.
In addition to cooperating with the human immune system to fight viruses, vitamin C itself also has anti-viral functions, which can kill free influenza viruses in vitro, as well as influenza viruses in cultured cells in vitro (Jariwalla and Harakeh, 1996). Research by domestic scholars also confirms this point. In 2012, an in vitro test published in the Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiration showed that vitamin C can kill the virus, and its effect is related to the dose: 2.5 mmol/L of vitamin C can kill Kills about 90% of influenza viruses, 20 mmol/L of vitamin C can kill all viruses. Vitamin C has the best effect in killing the virus within 12 hours of virus infection. If it is within 4 hours, it can basically eliminate all influenza viruses, but the effect of vitamin C in killing the virus in the later stage of infection becomes worse. This means that you can't hold yourself back in a hurry, and start taking vitamin C when you are in an emergency. Vitamin C should be supplemented every day on healthy and normal days, so that the virus can be eliminated at the slightest time.
